An artificial reef planned for the waters off Oak Island is expected to provide relief to nearby Yaupon Beach Reef, a spot that state marine officials say has become increasingly crowded with anglers during summer months.

The new reef, planned for a 162-acre area about two and a half miles south of Oak Island's Middleton Street water tower, would be circular with a diameter of about 1,000 yards, according to N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries spokesman Jim Francesconi.

Volunteers with the Oak Island-based Long Bay Artificial Reef Association petitioned the state for the reef because two others, Yaupon Beach and Tom McGlammery, are choked with fishing boats during peak months, Francesconi said.

On a day during the July Fourth weekend in 2010, for example, there were 84 boats anchored at Yaupon reef, he said.

The congestion is so bad at times that anglers can't anchor their boats, and drift-fishing is nearly impossible, area sport-fishing guides say.

Capt. Wally Trayah, owner of Oak island Fishing Charters, said the crowds increase every summer. Trayah hopes the proposed reef will take some of the pressure off older, heavily fished reefs nearby.

"It used to be, we'd go out and fish and there'd be four or five boats in the area. Now you see 35 to 40 boats near Yaupon," he said. "Some days you get in there and you can't anchor up. The new reef will be easy to access and great for business."

Too many people fishing also depletes those species anglers are most hoping to catch, such as flounder, sea bass, grouper, red drum and king mackerel, Francesconi said.

Fewer fish means anglers aren't as likely to reel in a prize-winning catch, which diminishes the "fishing experience," he said.... READ MORE
