Fiji milk fish harvested: Milk fish or “yawa” for the first time today was harvested at Vitawa village in Rakiraki. The project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Permanent Secretary for Fisheries Viliame Naupoto told FBC News plans are in place to develop the project.
“There are few options available, we can continue culturing milk fish or there are other options of doing culturing milk fish and grow them into adults, where they are sold as food and at the same time juvenile milk fish is very good bait for a long liner. So there is also that end where we can branch out to as far as the project is concerned.”
The village of Vitawa was chosen ahead of other villagers in Fiji to have the first ever milk fish pond because of the abundance of milk fish along the coast of Rakiraki.
About 1,500 milk fish was harvested today after nine months.
