Full dam lures anglers to Cooby
THEY came with assorted small boats, rods, lures and hope in their hearts.
Local anglers celebrating the reopening of Cooby Dam to the public weren't having a lot of luck on Saturday, but none of them seemed to mind much.
Mostly they were happy just to see the dam full and be able put their boats into the water.
Scott Parker and Rob Timmins came from Meringandan simply to float their boat so they could straighten her up on the trailer.
“We normally fish off the bank and we've never seen the dam like this,” they said.
“It's great.
“You can't even see the boat ramp — it's under water.”
The pair said they had heard the dam was going to be restocked, and the fishing would be “really, really good”.
For four-year-old Alexus Gill, Saturday will stay in her memory as the day she caught her first fish.
It may have been a catfish, but it was the only catch the family had all morning.
“It was good,” an excited Alexus said.
Dad Brad Gill said he had tried “spinners, everything” – without luck.
“We often come here and the fishing is normally a lot better.
“I think it's too muddy at the moment.
“But it's beautiful to see it full.
“Full dams are the one good thing to come out of the floods.”
Toowoomba fisherman Clint Russell said he had caught a couple of big yellowbelly before the rains, but he had never seen the dam full.
“It's good to see,” he said.
