BEACHCOMBER JOHN'S FISHING NEWS
Captain Pugwash’ (Pete) took his boat Edmund out of Garrucha early in the week and rough seas made him stay close in to the wall.
Him and mate George caught a few fish such as a forkbeard, some combers and pandoras and as is becoming the norm lately Pete lost a very big Conger.
He momentarily got it off the bottom, about six feet up, but it went back down and that was it. He did get most of his metal trace back and one of the two hooks but the rig was chewed up badly.
Pete is devising a new set up where the bait is at least three foot off the bottom to give him more chance of getting the fish up in the water.
Pete went out a couple of more times during the week, the first with ‘Last chance Dave’, ’Radio ham Kevin’ and George.
Kevin lost a good conger and even though it swam up towards the boat leaving Kevin with a slack line for a few moments, once he caught up with the fish it dived back down to the bottom and that’s where it stayed until it chewed through the metal trace. Just how big are some of these congers we are hooking?
Pete’s third trip out was with his wife Sally and ‘GB Stores Andy and Sharon’. They caught just small stuff but were excited to witness a pod of about 6 or 7 dolphins feeding on fish that were leaping out of the water to escape.
‘Captain Cuba’ (Brian) took his boat, Waverider, out of Garrucha early in the week and like Pete, before the good conditions arrived and he lost a big conger. Like Pete’s he managed to get it off the bottom briefly but it soon had its tail wrapped around something and other than a couple of head shakes the battle was soon over with a near straightened hook.
He was joined on the boat by ‘Paul the rope’ ‘Pulpo Basil’ and a friend. They caught around 50 fish, assorted species but nothing big. Another trip with mates Keith, Basil and Ken resulted in about 100assorted fish being landed; again nothing decent although Basil loves fish soup so a few combers in particular were kept for that.
Basil does love his fishing and was out again with Brian, they were joined by a mate of Basil’s and ‘Pueblo Neville’ and newbie on Waverider, Keith. Again a lot of small fish were caught just like Brian’s fourth trip out that week with ‘Inflatable Andy’, ‘Mike the watch’ and two lads from Albox.
See photo of Basil and a small pandora.
It obviously needs me to get out there now I’m back from my UK trip. Not that I catch bigger fish than others but the belachan and halibut pellets I put down seems to maybe make a difference to catches for the boat as a whole.
Brian has now moved to the main marina, close the Capitanos office which is handy for those anglers who may have found access to his boat difficult, no problems anymore.
‘Captain Duncan Sunshine’ took some mates out on his Garrucha cased boat. They caught only a few small pandoras and combers but had great pleasure watching a small pod of dolphins. They also saw a turtle sunbathing on the surface.
‘London Bill’ has been knocking out carrier bags of mullet and palomete from various shore marks in Garrucha and Mojacar. Bread presented on the bottom or floated have both been successful in ideal seas.
The venue for last week’s ‘Rods and Reels’ club match was Murcia’s River Segura. This is a venue full of fish but not on the match day. The north easterly wind took its toll and they had 8 blanks. The day was absolutely freezing as the sun does not get to the south side of the river this time of year.
Top anglers on the day were.
1st Ian ( From the Darkside ) fishing the pole using bread with 16.2/3lbs, 2nd Mick (The Arsenal ) Hill fishing the feeder using corn with 15lbs. 3rd Dave ( The Bikeman ) fishing the feeder using corn with 12.1/4lbs.
‘Abbey Angling Club’ fished well north of us lot down here on the 8ft Drain, although they might change its name to the 13ft Drain as the water has been so high lately.
Fishing is still patchy with just the odd peg producing, the fish coming to maggot and corn. Hopefully as the weather gets warmer the catch rate should improve.
The results were as follows. 1st Mark (Kens Friend) Harrington with 14lbs. 2nd Bill (The Master) Reade with 12.5lbs. 3rd Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 11.5lbs.
The next meeting of the Syedpur fishing club based in Albox (Sea and coarse) will take place at 4pm at the Syedpur Restaurant, Albox, on Wednesday February 16th, then every two weeks.
