Statewide fishing snaps ban into effect

Statewide fishing snaps ban into effect

A Queensland Government ban on snapper fishing comes into effect today to help regenerate dwindling fish stocks.

The six-week statewide ban also applies to teraglin jew and pearl perch and runs until the end of March.

Queensland Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin says the Government is still consulting with the fishing industry about introducing bolder, more lasting strategies.

"This is a highly emotional issue for people and people have vented their views at meetings, but I want to make sure that we have a snapper fishery into the future.

"It's important to note that Government has no preferred position on the four options outlined in the RIS (Regulatory Impact Statement).
"That's why we're consulting and that's why I would expect that we'll continue to have that level of consultation."

Mr Mulherin says the ban does not apply to traditional owners if they are catching the fish for personal consumption.
