I have been bugging well-known local outdoor writer Cliff Covington for some info on how to catch the white bass spawn on the Bayou Pierre in Port Gibson. After reading his article Belly Up to the Bar some of our local club members were intrigued with the idea of catching white bass during the spawning run. I made it my mission to help figure this one out because white bass are an excellent species for fly fishing. My own experiences have been at Chotard in the dog days of summer when the bass begin blitzing, see White Bass Blitz a Flyrodder’s Dream. But catching the Bayou Pierre white bass spawn is no small feat considering that the Mississippi River doesn’t wait for good weather to start rising and the timing of it’s rise along with locating good water and current on the Bayou Pierre is crucial. By watching the weather, using USGS Stream gauges and bugging Cliff I decided this weekend might be the ticket. Unfortunately the Bayou Pierre was still stained the color of cafe’ au lait and my fishing partner and I only managed one fish. Being a slow day, I decided to try out my new compact video camcorder my wife bought me for my birthday. I first tried it out on fishing partner Dusty McPherson’s white bass. I know my buddies will want to know what I caught, seeing as how 26 of my closest Magnolia Fly Fisher buddies were fishing in the trout laden waters of Arkansas and ribbing me because I stayed to hunt turkeys and fish muddy water…well, here’s some fun for you guys. I hooked a big fish and to get a “youtube” moment I handed the rod to partner Dusty to bring in while I took the video. Here’s what happened…Glens fish.
But the Bayou Pierre is only 8 minutes from my hunting camp, which provides the opportunity to mix in some turkey hunting with the fishing. Of course my efforts in bagging a gobbler were also not very successful, but I did manage to call up four jake gobblers.
Of course turkeys weren’t the only thing moving this past weekend, this big snake in the Bayou Pierre was not intimidated by our canoe.
All in all it was a pretty mediocre weekend, but the weather is great all week this week and I would absolutely love to steal away and do another white bass, turkey combo day. You never know, work may slack up for this poor man’s fly fisher to catch some fish and maybe even bag a turkey. Hey, at least I have a new camcorder to tinker with on the slow days.
