With Spring officially here, the time is right to organize the takle box and get some bait. The following are area fishing reports from the Kansas Wildlife and Parks website, www.kdwp.state.ks.us.
Updated 3/18/11
Many nice channel catfish were sampled in test netting this fall. Fish on dropoffs and structure this fall with stinkbait or cut shad.
Sampling indicated high numbers of wipers approaching 20 inches are in the lake, with fish up to 25 inches sampled. Try trolling open water this spring for wipers.
White Crappie, Fair, Up to 12"
Crappie samples were decent this fall. Anglers will have to sort through small crappies to find keepers, but some crappies approaching 14 inches were sampled. Look for fish near structure using small minnows and jigs.
Saugeye, Fair, Up to 5 lb.
Saugeye should be moving to shallow, rocky areas at night to spawn. Cast in the mornings, evenings, and nights for spawning saugeye.
Flathead Catfish, Fair, all sizes
Fish live bait near structure once the water warms up and flatheads start moving around.
Wellington Hargas Creek
Updated 3/18/11
Channel Catfish, Fair, all sizes
Use dead shad or stinkbait in shallow water.
Crappie, Fair, up to 14"
No reports yet, but crappie fishing should be excellent this spring. Hargis Creek will be one of the best crappie bets around. Fish small jigs and minnows near any structure.
Largemouth Bass, Fair, Up to 18"
No reports, but some nice bass are caught at Hargis Creek every year.
Saugeye, Fair, Up to 18"
Sampling indicated that a couple recent saugeye stockings have succeeded and there should be catchable numbers of saugeye in the lake for the next few years. Try live bait under a bobber or on the bottom for a chance at some nice saugeye.
