NEW MELONES RESERVOIR -- Kokanee action has slowed dramatically from the "lights-out" action of June and July. Jeff Boyle of Bass Pro Shops in Manteca fished the Central Valley Angler's Kokanee Derby with 62 others, and said the fish are holding just above the bottom, close to structure. Ted Handel and Tim Isner won, weighing in three quality kokes for a total over 6-pounds, but they only scratched up 6 fish all day, working the dam pocket. Small, second-year fish are making up the majority of those caught. Trout fishing is still slow except at night under lights in deeper parts of the lake. Bass fishing is also slow in the stained water with noise making baits working best. Top-water lures are effective in the mornings and evenings with Rattletraps, Spinnerbaits, jigs with rattles and Senkos working better in the heat. Best action is in shallow water in the backs of coves. Catfish are the most consistent, holding in shallow water. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods said, "The cats like big boulders and structure to hide in, especially near muddy flats, and successful catfish anglers move their bait often, even dragging it along the bottom and bouncing it into rocky nooks and crannies, rather than letting it sit still." Best to fish at night, but there has been solid action during the day. Crappie are holding close to submerged trees in Bear Cove, Coyote Creek or up the river arm. Call: (209) 736-4333, Monte Smith (209) 581-4734, Danny Layne (209) 586 2383, Sierra Sport Fishing (209) 599-2023.
SAN LUIS RESERVOIR and O'NEILL FOREBAY -- Striper action in the main lake is now the top local option for linesides. Paul Jolley of Coyote Bait in San Jose reported a good bite with Lucky Craft Pointer 128s in ghost minnow from the banks in the early mornings. One boat limited in the Basalt Recreation Area tossing the rip baits toward the banks before the sun hits the water. Jolley added the trolling bite is improving, also in the early mornings. Merritt Gilbert said big fish continue to be taken at night on the 128s, and added the patterns of Gun Metal or American shad as also effective. In the Forebay, weeds are choking access for trollers, but schoolie stripers are being caught on weedless Zoom flukes on a Texas-rig or with small rip baits such as the Lucky Craft 100s in ghost minnow. Call: Ly's Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644; Coyote Bait and Tackle (408) 463-0711.
McSWAIN RESERVOIR -- Jason Mello of A-I Bait in Snelling said bank anglers have been picking up rainbows from the handicapped docks or the brush pile with white Gulp! Power Eggs or Power Bait in corn yellow/garlic or rainbow/garlic. Trollers are working the regular pattern from the floating restrooms to the dam in the deepest portions of the lake with night crawlers behind a cowbell flasher. Call: (209) 378-2534
McCLURE RESERVOIR -- Those fishing in last weekend's bass tourney had tough going, as only two of 36 anglers got limits. The best action has been with top-water lures such as Super Spooks, Ricos, or PopRs in white. Once the sun hits the water, anglers are working the bottom at 20 feet with either brown/purple jigs, drop shotting or dart heading Reaction Innovation's Bad Shad Green or Pro Gold Pro Worms from the banks to 20 feet. Jason Mello of A-1 Bait in Snelling reported a 10.5-pound largemouth was taken from the banks at McClure Point with a motor oil/redflake Senko. White spinnerbaits are working in Temperance Flats. The catfish bite has been heating up with chicken livers, anchovies or crawdads for fish over 4 pounds. Crappie are biting small minnows under lights from McClure Point to Bagby. Trout and king salmon are also hitting minnows under lights near the dam. The Hornitos Bridge has been good for bank anglers with sherbet Power Bait. Call: A-1 Bait (209) 563-6505, Bub Tosh (209) 404-0053.
