How to Attach Weights to a Fishing Line

How to Attach Weights to a Fishing Line

Weights are very important when you are fishing. Not only do they keep the line down in the water, but they also help to cast the line a little bit further than usual. There are two common types of fishing weights. The “split shot” weight is a lead weight that looks like a round pellet, and the “pearl” weight is a teardrop shaped weight with a round eye on one end. If you are headed out fishing, but don’t know how to attach weights on on your fishing line, this article will outline the steps you need to take to do so
Instructions

How To Use the Split Shot Weight

1 Determine how much weight you will need. Because the split shot weights come in different sizes, you can pick and choose the amount that you need. The purpose of weighting down the line is to lower the hook deep into the water.

2 Open the weights. The split shot weights have little nubs on one end of them. This will work as a simple lever of sorts to open them up. You will need something a little stronger than your fingers to open them up. Pliers work well for this. Using the pliers, clamp down on the end of the split shot weights. This will cause the split shot to open up.

3 Place the weight on the fishing line, about a foot above where your bait will be. Put the open end of the weight in the desired area. Use the pliers to clamp down on the open end.

How To Use the Pearl Weight

1 Select the amount of weight to use. Pearl weights, in general, are made much heavier than the split shot. For this reason, you only need to use one at a time.

2 Grab the pearl weights by the bottom of the weight, below the eye. Attaching a pearl weight is a lot simpler than attaching the split shot weight. It’s just a matter of tying a simple knot.

3 Thread the line on the fishing pole through the eye of the pearl weight. Push through and allow yourself a few inches worth of line to be pushed through. This should be more than enough to work with. This will create a big loop on the other side of the pearl weight.

4 Put the pearl weight back through the loop. Pull tightly. You can repeat this process as many times as you need to add strength to the knot. (Only knot is required.)
